Xpat Interview: Yvonne Dederick

Previous experiences included Finance and Buisness Development and Strategic Director roles at major multinationals including Emmis International (International CFO of radio companies including Slager), HBO Business Development, Director of Business Development, HBO Business Development, Pepsico Hungary Director of Business Developmenet, RJ Reynold CFO and Manager, Arthur Andersen.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
Came more than once. Most recently 1998 .
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Spent my whole life being a foreigner and besides Hungary also spent time in Austrial, Brazil, Germany.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
My mother is Hungarian so I don’t think I was surprised but I did think there would be no difference between an experience in Vienna vs. Budapest by 2012.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
They must eat the food I prepare and drink the wine I match for them. Then they must see the Status Park and get a funny massage wearing strange attire at a Turkish bath.
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Last time answering a similar question I said paprikas csirke but now I think its just plain fried chicken with mashed potatoes on a Sunday lunch.
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Coriander paste
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Imádom és ugye? Imádom for its passion that cannot be replicated in English in my opinion and ugye because its so cutely funny and silly especially when used often.
8. What do you miss the most from home?
I have many homes but I do miss from the States the order and professionalism and proactive attitude on many issues and in many companies.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Definitely performing arts, specifically related to music or music management.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Librarian (sorry)
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Elounda Beach resort on Crete
12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Somewhere lively, warm, big night life but relaxation during the day.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
I did like Sheena E and Prince. Also loved MC Hammer. Hobby was body building and fitness competitions.
14. What can't you resist?
Finding ways to inspire others, and to meet inspiring people
15. Red wine or white?
Red
16. Book or movie?
Movie
17. Morning person or night person?
Very definitely night with an envy of morning persons who get to see the amazing beauty of a lovely early morning.
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Women’s Rights
19. Buda side or Pest side?
Live in Buda because of the kids but I am a city girl deep down.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
You get back from others only what you can give. So give as much as possible and do not ever hold back.
