XpatLoop Interview: Mariya Yefremova
Mariya Yefremova is a dual citizen of Russia and the United States. She attended Hunter College in New York City where she received three Bachelor of Arts degrees, pursuing her love for English literature and political science.



After working for an environmental nonprofit organization recruiting volunteers and teaching people how to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost, she moved to Hungary to pursue a Masters in Human Rights in the Legal Studies Department of Central European University.

She also blogs for the Huffington Post and GALO magazine.


1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in Hungary August 20th of last year to attend university.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I am an expatriate of Russia and now and expatriate of the U.S.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The beauty

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Taste langos, buy palinka, see Buda Castle, climb the Fisherman's Bastion, walk in Hero Square, and visit Central Market, topping it all off at the baths.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Goulash

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Cheese

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Egészségedre

8. What do you miss the most from home?
New York pizza and bagels

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Novelist

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Anything related to business

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Prague

Slovenia

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Death Cab for Cutie was my favorite band and the Spanish Apartment my favourite film

Chocolate

Freedom of speech
