1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

I first visited Hungary when I was very young, traveling around Europe by train. Viktor Orbán was still in the Communist party.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?

No, but I've travelled a lot, sometimes spending over a month in one country. I once went round the world.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?

The large developments of high-rise panel flats are relatively free of anti-social behaviour and crime. In the UK, similar developments are covered in graffiti, and are dangerous at night. When I lived in a housing estate in London, it was run by gangs. A police officer got shot dead, and the gunman didn't even bother running away. He walked away laughing, and never got caught. I had a party once, and the local teenagers made all my guests pay them an entry fee. Then they came in my flat, and stole my stereo.

4. Friends are in Budapest for the weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?

Go to Brody House for a drink. And look at the view from the Fisherman's Bastion.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?

Langos, with cheese, sour cream, and garlic. But I don't eat them often, as I want to avoid a heart attack.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?

The glass shelves.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?

Punci.

8. What do you miss most from home?

Ancient country pubs in Devon, made of granite. But these days most of them have been refurbished inside. Their original features have been ripped out, and replaced with laminate flooring and big screens showing football. So I don't miss them.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

I'd like to own some fine art galleries, and deal in art.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?

Executioner. Especially where they behead people.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?

The Croatian coast. We drove there from Budapest.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?

Goa, in India, Dude!

13. Apart from temptation what can't you resist?

Hungarian women.

14. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

The Rolling Stones.

15. Red or white?

Red!

16. Books or films?

'Slave of the Huns', by Gárdonyi Géza. My Hungarian sister-in-law bought it for me for Christmas, soon after I married her sister. I think she intended it as an instruction manual rather than a historical novel. 'Theorem', by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

17. Morning person or night person?

What does the word "morning" mean?

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?

Freedom of speech, and the freedom not to be murdered.

19. Buda or Pest?

Buda. Although Pest is more convenient for the airport.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?

"I never heard any music as sweet as the silence when it ends."

21. What sort of tyres do you have on your car?

225/45 r17s, front and rear. But soon I'll be changing to Winter TS 860 Ss at the front. TS 860 Ts at the rear.

22. Have you ever written a novel?

Yes, it's called 'The Sex Life of a Comedian'. It's about a stand-up comedian who gets a job wearing a blue furry costume in a world-famous TV show. It's available on amazon as a paperback or e-book.
