Watch: Pro-Palestinian Solidarity Rally & Counter-Demo Held in Budapest
- 24 Aug 2026 11:11 AM
Several dozen demonstrators took part in the pro-Palestinian rally, accompanied by significant police presence.
Participants in the demonstration called for the release of Palestinian prisoners, particularly pediatrician and hospital director Hussam Abu Safieh, who was arrested in 2024 and has been detained by Israeli authorities in Gaza ever since.
The protesters, who arrived carrying Palestinian flags, demanded freedom for Palestine and called for genuine peace in the Middle East.
Participants at a counter-demonstration held in front of the Dohany Street Synagogue and organised by the Jewish Community of the Zsambek Basin demanded a ban on demonstrations supporting terrorism.
According to the demonstrators, the doctor is in fact a terrorist responsible for the deaths of numerous Israeli civilians and a high-ranking member of the terrorist organisation Hamas.
They objected to the fact that the authorities did not ban the pro-Palestinian rally, which, they said, was tantamount to glorifying terrorism. They also protested the fact that police -- citing their inability to guarantee the safety of the counter-protesters -- did not allow them to hold their demonstration at the same location as the pro-Palestinian rally.
The pro-Palestinian demonstration was also opposed by Israel's ambassador to Budapest, the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary (Mazsihisz), the Action and Protection Foundation and Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony.
