Sauska Starts English-Language Cellar Tours in Historic Budafok
- 24 Aug 2026 12:39 PM
Located in Budafok’s historic underground cellar network, the Sauska facility covers around 10,000 square metres and has been home to the winery’s award-winning sparkling wines since 2015.
Grapes from Sauska’s own vineyards in Tokaj are made into dry base wines before being transported to Budafok, where they mature into sparkling wine using the traditional method, the same production method associated with Champagne.
Inside Sauska’s Historic Budafok Cellar
The English-language tour lasts approximately 60–75 minutes and begins with an introduction to Tokaj, Budafok and the history of the cellar. Visitors then learn about the production of traditional-method sparkling wine before heading deeper into the underground cellar network.
The tour concludes with a tasting of three méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines, including the multi-award-winning Sauska Brut.
English Tours Available Twice a Month
Sauska plans to offer at least two English-language tours each month alongside its Hungarian-language programme, with the possibility of adding more dates if demand is strong.
Tours require a minimum of six participants. Tickets cost HUF 10,500 per person, including the guided tour and three-wine tasting.
Upcoming English-language dates listed by Sauska include September 4, September 13, October 20 and October 30.
The cellar is located at Nagytétényi út 36–42 in Budapest’s 22nd district, approximately 10 kilometres from the city centre and reachable by public transport in around 30 minutes.
Things to Know Before Booking
Since the tour takes place underground, the cellar remains pleasantly cool at around 13°C throughout the year, so wearing an extra layer is advisable even during hot weather. Comfortable shoes are also recommended.
The cellar environment includes areas with low light and can be noisy, and so the tour is not for those taking young children or strollers.
In fact participants must be 18 or older to take part in the tasting.
Private Tours Also Available
Sauska also offers private tours in English and Hungarian, with dates arranged separately. These can be customised with options including exclusive tastings, themed sparkling-wine selections and tailored programmes.
The private experiences can be particularly suitable for groups of friends, corporate events or expats looking for a more personalised introduction to Budapest’s long-established winemaking tradition.
For those living here who want to discover a different side of Budapest, the Sauska cellar tour offers an opportunity to combine local history, award-winning winemaking and a sparkling tasting - all beneath the streets of Budafok.
