Having lived in several European countries, including Hungary, his writing is strongly shaped by place, identity and the experience of living between cultures.

His latest book, Caminhar em Contramão / Séta ellentétes irányba, published in Portuguese and Hungarian by Napkút Kiadó, brings together 23 texts inspired by Budapest’s 23 districts.

He returns to Budapest in September 2026 to launch the book.
 

1. Where did you grow up?

In a working-class town near Lisbon, Portugal.

2. If you could be an expat anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

Northern Ireland. I’m already only a few miles away...

3. What do you miss most since you moved away from Hungary?

I don’t live in Hungary anymore, so I can answer this one from experience: I miss the lack of diversity and Hungary’s distinctly European atmosphere.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend – what must they absolutely see and do?

Visit one of the thermal baths first thing in the morning, sit in a café by the Opera, and explore the Jewish sights of District VII. If baths aren’t your thing, head up to the Castle instead — also early in the morning.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?

Kakaós csiga.

6. What is your favourite sport / form of exercise?

Walking. The best thing for the body and the brain.

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?

Balatonalmádi.

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

Meteorologist. I could talk about the weather professionally instead of doing it for free.

9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?

Waiter. 

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?

USA, USA, USA!

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?

I’m heading to Poland this weekend, so Poland!

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

Band: Moonspell. Film: American Psycho. Hobby: reading. 

13. Apart from temptation, what can’t you resist?

Figs.

14. Red wine or white?

Fröccs, forever!

15. Book or movie?

Book. Without a shadow of a doubt.

16. Morning person or night person?

Morning. I suppose that was already clear from my advice to Budapest visitors.

17. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?

Antisemitism. 

18. Buda or Pest side?

Buda. I used to call myself a Buda boy.

19. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?

Launching my own business, Ring of Culture. 

20. What would you say is your personal motto?

Don’t tell me what to do, what to think or what to say. Don’t even try.
