- 3 Sep 2026 8:50 AM
Many areas saw average temperatures above 25 C, with parts of the Southern Great Plain exceeding 26 C, and even higher mountain regions averaging over 20 C.
The heatwave was accompanied by extreme dryness: August's national average rainfall was just 15.6mm -- 74 percent below the 1991-2020 average of 59.5mm, making it the fourth driest August nationally since 1901.
Some areas, including around Miskolc, parts of the Southern Great Plain, and the southern Duna-Tisza region, recorded their driest August since 1901, with rainfall below 40mm in most areas and under 5mm in parts of the Great Plain.
