Hungary's Fidesz May Scrap By-Elections

Fidesz plans to abolish parliamentary by-elections between July 1 of this year and the 2014 general election, news website Index has reported. Caucus leader Antal Rogán confirmed that the party is examining the possibility of such an interim regulation, as any by-election after July could not be held before November.

Corruption is an organic part of business life in the view of a large majority of Hungarian executives, according to a survey by consultancy Ernst & Young. Some 70% of respondents take corruption for granted, similar to the 74% East European average, but far above the 39% figure for Western Europe.

The Új Színház theatre saw its audience numbers dwindle by 33% last year after the controversial appointment of György Dörner as artistic director. Budapest city council’s finance committee was informed on Tuesday that 20,000 fewer people saw Új Színház productions in 2012 than in 2011.
