Uniquely Hungary: Insider's Guide To Vác, By Anne Zwack
- 23 Jun 2023 7:25 AM
- getting around
Monosyllabic and a little difficult to pronounce, Vác does not sound like an inviting place. It is, however, one of the loveliest small towns in Hungary, or as they say in Italian, a laughing little town. 35 kilometres from Budapest, it has escaped unscathed all the ravages of the sixties and seventies, preserved like a fly in amber so that it looks today much as it must have in the eighteenth ...
Uniquely Hungary: Architecture In Budapest, By Anne Zwack
- 15 Oct 2020 7:26 AM
- getting around
If there was any doubt in your mind that Hungarians are individualists – a spirit somewhat dampened by history in the last century, but which is flowing back – you have only to walk the streets of Budapest where no two buildings appear to have been built in exactly the same style.
Uniquely Hungary: The Lions Of Budapest, By Anne Zwack
- 8 Oct 2020 7:24 AM
- community & culture
If you think about it, Hungarians are not the only people to be partial to lions, as they are like book ends on gateposts of villas in suburbia and guardians of monuments all over the world. Everywhere you go there are crests and doorknockers and gargoyles and fountains with the Lion King theme.
Uniquely Hungary: Csepel Island
- 27 Jan 2019 7:59 AM
- getting around
By Anne Zwack: There are people who have been living all their lives in Budapest who have never even been to the Csepel Island. The reasons for this are obscure as the centre of Csepel is ten minutes drive from the Palace of Arts. The island was the first stopping place for the invading Magyars and is called Csepel after Arpad’s groom.
Budapest Through The Lens: 6 Films that Capture Hungarian History & Culture

- entertainment
By Andrew Davison: Budapest is an iconic city, with stunning architecture, a vibrant atmosphere and a storied history, so naturally, it’s a city that attracts filmmakers, both locally and from abroad. As Budapest lends itself to being dressed up as Paris, Berlin or even Buenos Aires, you’ll find its familiar streets disguised in dozens of modern movies.
Uniquely Hungary: Restaurant Gundel's Good Old Magic, By Anne Zwack
- 3 May 2016 9:00 AM
- food & drink
When I made my first fleeting visit to Budapest in 1975, the Gundel Restaurant was a burnt out husk: the grandiose old restaurant which took its name from Károly Gundel in 1910 had been destroyed by fire. The next time was in the late eighties when the restaurant had been rebuilt and redecorated according to the criteria of the Soviet era in fifty shades of brown. Gaggles of waiters loitered in ...
Uniquely Hungary: Emigres & Repats, By Anne Zwack
- 5 Apr 2016 9:00 AM
- community & culture
So many of our expats are émigrés who have come home. My husband lived for forty five years abroad but he always rejected the epithet émigré. “If you wear galoshes,” I told him looking down at his feet on a snowy New York sidewalk, “you are an émigré.”
Uniquely Hungary: The Ugliest Statue In Budapest, By Anne Zwack
- 1 Mar 2016 9:00 AM
- getting around
At a time when statues are going up all over Budapest I would like to nominate a candidate for the ugliest statue in town. You should drive up above the Gellért Hotel to the corner of Minerva and Pipacs utca where the one time Swedish Legation is located.
Xpat Opinion: Statue Strife Nr 2: György Donáth
- 1 Mar 2016 8:00 AM
- community & culture
Commenting on a foiled initiative to unveil the bust of a pre-war right-wing politician, left-wing commentators accuse the government of indulging in a cult of racist personalities. Their pro-government counterpart denies the allegation that György Donáth was an anti-Semite, while an independent conservative author calls on the opposing sides to show more tolerance towards each other.
