So many of our expats are émigrés who have come home. My husband lived for forty five years abroad but he always rejected the epithet émigré. “If you wear galoshes,” I told him looking down at his feet on a snowy New York sidewalk, “you are an émigré.”

On display until 29 February: The UVG Art Gallery in Budapest is pleased to present the exhibition “The Inner Reflection” by Lars Schwander. Helmut Newton once said: "My job as a portrait photographer is to seduce, amuse and entertain." Something of the same nature is found in Schwander’s photographs.

It's a memorial year for Hungarian composer Bartok, on the 70th anniversary of his death, and for Belgium composer Franck on the 125 th anniversary of his death. You will hear both great composers' pieces. On the program also two beautiful nocturnes from Chopin and two characteristic pieces as from Debussy.

I read somewhere that everyone should have three Hums: Humanity, Humour and Humility. And President Göncz had all three in spades, although his most endearing quality was his humility.

Until I came to this sensational exhibition at the Ludwig Museum I didn’t know I liked Pop Art. Basically I only knew Warhol’s Campbell Soup and Lichtenstein’s comic strips which are here as well, but I was unprepared for the arresting impact of this huge collection of art works whose artistic quality, it seems to me, outweighs what they call in marketing meetings here the “Vow Effect”.

If asked what is the most famous Hungarian export one might mumble about salami and paprika and foie gras and then look vague. Meanwhile, I wonder how many people know on the other hand that the Budapest Festival Orchestra today is bringing the best of Hungary all over the world.
