The tournament draw in Hamburg was a star-studded affair, European football luminaries such as Brian Laudrup and Steve McManaman participating in the drawing of each nation into the six four-team groups for the UEFA European Championship in Germany in summer 2024.
Marco Rossi's team qualified for the tournament finals proper in style this year, finishing unbeaten in their qualifying group ahead of the likes of Serbia and Bulgaria and were placed in the second pot of seeds for the Euro 2024 draw.
They will therefore approach Group A of Euro 2024 with confidence, despite being drawn to face three-time continental champions Germany for the second European Championship in a row (the two nations drew 2-2 in Munich at Euro 2020), as well as major tournament stalwarts Switzerland and a resurgent Scotland.
"The group could have been easier or more difficult, but really in a European Championship, there is no easy group and no easy match", Rossi commented after the draw. "Clearly, the Germans are the strongest in the group, while Scotland are strong physically and fourth seeds Switzerland are also of high quality.
All three matches will be difficult and all four teams have a similar chance in terms of progressing from the group. It is our dream to qualify for the knockout stages, but I emphasise that this is our dream and can't be our expectation. We need to continue to keep both feet on the ground and develop as much as possible ahead of the tournament, while remembering that the results we've achieved in recent years mean no one can now say for sure that they'll beat the Hungarian national team. We can't place too great a burden on our players but we would like to please our supporters".
