New Owner, Old Recipes: Much-Loved Budapest Canteen to Reopen
The legendary Kádár canteen-style restaurant on Klauzál tér in Budapest’s Seventh District will reopen in the autumn with new ownership and old recipes. After necessary renovations, a famous local entrepreneur will reopen the restaurant founded by Béla Kádár and then run by Sándor Orbán until its closure during the Covid era.

The restaurant first opened in 1957 was closed during the pandemic, and has not reopened since, but Sziget Festival founder Károly Gerendai recently bought both the property and the brand.

Gerendai, who also owns several Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Costes, Costes Downtown and Rumour, said he will not take the Kádár in the direction of fine dining.

He said he would rather revive the original concept and atmosphere with checkered tablecloths and Hungarian home-style food.

Over the years many famous local guests such as artists, athletes, and politicians frequented the place, and now hopefully this will continue in the future.
