Richard Wagner‘s masterpiece returns to the Metropolitan Opera after a gap of more than a decade. The New York theatre's relationship with its music director James Levine is unique in the almost 140-year history of the Met, and probably of the world: the 72-year-old conductor has conducted a total of some 2,500 performances of nearly 90 operas here since his debut in 1971.

The Hungarian state will buy an art collection from former US ambassador Nancy Goodman Brinker for $5.5 million. The collection of mostly 20th-century Hungarian paintings will be put on display at the De la Motte palace in Buda Castle, which will be renovated for this purpose, according to a government decree published in Magyar Közlöny.

An exhibition on the “war between brothers” that was the First World War which has opened in Budapest’s Várkert Bazár events centre at the foot of Budapest castle has been hailed as the most important exhibition of the year at its opening.
