The Central Prosecutors Office is investigating what may be one of the biggest series of abuses committed by Hungarian police, based on reports filed by the National Police, Népszabadság reports. The suspicion is that a group of senior officers regularly offered Budapest Police services for cash – for instance securing dangerous or oversize shipments – without issuing invoices.

A couple posing as police officers have been captured in Budapest, Budapest Police announced on Thursday. A 29-year-old man and his 25-year-old common-law partner were pretending to do house searches in order to break into and steal from homes, Budapest Police said. Proceedings are underway.

A Portuguese youth who presumably wanted to bathe in the Danube on Friday, disappeared in the Budapest stretch of the river, Budapest Police officer Judit Pap reported on Saturday. Two foreign youths jumped into the river from Erzsébet híd, and one of them swam ashore but lost sight of his 22-year-old friend, who has not yet been found, Pap added.

Police have found four of five paintings stolen from a Buda home on March 15, including a rare work by Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry. The painting, Szerelmesek Találkozása (“Lovers Meeting”) is the most valuable Hungarian painting ever sold in Hungary, changing hands for Ft 230 million in 2006.

Organisers: We welcome the ruling of the Budapest Metropolitan Court, which annuls the banning order against the Budapest Pride march issued by the Budapest Police last week. However, as the Court could not examine the fact that the police clearly violated its equal treatment obligations, we are taking further legal action with the help of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee.
