Throughout most of the 20th century, neon lights were the sign of progress and modernity – and behind the Iron Curtain, the illusion of it. Fixed upon the crumbling facades of the once magnificent buildings of post-war Budapest, neon lights beamed banal advertisements and Communist propaganda just like in any other country of the Eastern Bloc.

Lidl Magyarország will increase the wages of all of its non-executive staff by 15%, effective from July 1, the discount retail chain has announced. Lidl raised salaries by 5% as recently as March. About 90% of Lidl’s 4,000 employees will benefit from the new raise.

2017 Budget Bill Targets Deficit Of HUF 1,166.4 BN

Hungary’s budget is expected to run a cash-flow-based deficit of 1,166.4 billion forints (EUR 3.7bn) next year, well above the 761.6 billion gap targeted for 2016. The 2017 budget bill targets revenue of 17,374.9 billion forints and expenditures of 18,541.3 billion.

The first Ritz-Carlton hotel in Hungary opened in downtown Budapest on Tuesday with 170 rooms and 30 suites in the building formerly occupied by Le Meridien hotel.The usual room price without discounts is €315 for the coming weekend, business news website Napi adds.

Investment volume in Hungary grew by an annual 7% in the fourth quarter, bringing 2015 investment growth to 0.6%, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Investment growth reflected almost exclusively activity in the public administration, social insurance and defence sectors where investments were up 90% from a year earlier in Q4 and rose nearly 50% in the full year.

2015 brought many changes to Hungary’s social welfare system. From March 2015 needy families now receive far less social assistance than before. A number of programs were eliminated. In their place, local governments can offer so-called “settlement assistance”, but who receives how much is now entirely left up to the local governments.

The first new biometric personal identification card was presented by interior ministry state secretary László Tasnádi in Budapest on Monday. The new e-card combines personal identification functions with social insurance and tax information. Interior Ministry state secretary for law enforcement László Tasnádi said the e-card “opens the door to digital processing”.
