The level of the Danube peaked in Budapest at 891cm at 4 a.m. Monday, exceeding the previous record of 860cm reached in 2006. There was no catastrophe at the city’s two most vulnerable sites of Batthyány tér and Margaret Island, nor anywhere else in the city, mayor István Tarlós declared at a joint press conference with the prime minister.

The flood is leaving Budapest. One of the most threatened area of the city was the Római-part (as always). Fortunately the area was spared (unlike in 2002 or in 2006). Building a dam here – even a mobile dam – is a controversial topic, but a new innovation may be able to solve the problem.
