Hungary’s population decline slowed in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period in 2015 as both the number of births and the number of deaths decreased, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reports. The figures show that there were 51,882 births in January-July, a 1.4% drop from the same period a year earlier.

Hungary continues to have some of the highest suicide rates in Europe, according to a study published by the World Health Organization. WHO data suggests that Guyana in South America is the country where suicides are most common, with 42 out of 100 000 inhabitants dying as a consequence of intentional self-harm each year.

Russian pianist Sergei Beliavsky won the second prize and the audience’s award, while the third prize went to Germany’s Leon Bernsdorf. Krisztián Kocsis, the only Hungarian competitor, was given the human resources ministry’s special prize.
