Ferenc Liszt Piano Competition Opens In Budapest
The 14th Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition opened with a concert in the Budapest Academy of Music on Friday evening. The event marks the 105th anniversary of the great composer’s birth and the 130th anniversary of his death.

Thirty-six pianists from 11 countries on three continents will start competing next week.

The honorary president of the jury will be Hungarian composer and pianist György Kurtág.

The jury will be presided by Kun Woo Paik of the Republic of Korea.

The chief patron of the event is János Áder, Hungary’s president.

The competition will end on September 11 with the awarding ceremony and a gala concert.

Repertoire

I. Selection – 20 minutes music to be sent

The jury will select maximum 50 participants to the Preliminary round.

One etude and another Liszt piece chosen by the applicant.

II. Preliminary – 30 minutes per competitor

A) Two pieces must be chosen from the followings:

No. 5 ‘Feux follets’
No. 10 Allegro agitato molto
Grandes études de Paganini, R. 3/b; S. 141
No. 3 La Campanella.

No. 4 Au bord d’une source

B) Any further original Liszt composition and/or transcription, paraphrase might be included into the program to complete the allocated time.

III. Semi-final – 50 minutes per competitor

A) One work must be chosen from the followings:

IV. Final – competitors will perform twice

A) Sonata in B minor R. 21; S. 178

B) Concerto Nr. 1 in E flat major R. 455; S. 124

Concerto Nr. 2 in A major R. 456; S. 125

Totentanz – Danse macabre R. 457; S. 126

The competitor has to know all three concerti. The piece to be performed will be selected by the jury after the Semi-final.

All pieces should be played by memory.
