The number of births fell by 7% in July compared with the same month in the previous year, while deaths dropped by 15%, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

Every 7th of January I have to call four friends called Attila and congratulate them on their name day. A Hungarian table calendar tells you whose name day it is, and just to make sure every morning the radio announcer congratulates those who are celebrating their name day. In addition a little sign at the florist’s reminds you about the day’s name just in case you forgot.

In the first three quarters of 2016, 68,802 children were born, 0.2% less than in the same period last year. The number of deaths was 92,437, which meant a decrease of 7.6% compared to January–September 2015. The natural decrease was 23,635 persons, 7,525 lower than a year earlier.

Hungary’s rate of population decline slowed in the first eight months of the year compared with the same period in 2015, as both the number of births and the number of deaths decreased, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported.

Hungary continues to have some of the highest suicide rates in Europe, according to a study published by the World Health Organization. WHO data suggests that Guyana in South America is the country where suicides are most common, with 42 out of 100 000 inhabitants dying as a consequence of intentional self-harm each year.
