In the first three quarters of 2016, 68,802 children were born, 0.2% less than in the same period last year. The number of deaths was 92,437, which meant a decrease of 7.6% compared to January–September 2015. The natural decrease was 23,635 persons, 7,525 lower than a year earlier.

Hungary’s rate of population decline slowed in the first eight months of the year compared with the same period in 2015, as both the number of births and the number of deaths decreased, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported.

By 2060 the population of Hungary (9.9 million today) might fall by 2 million, every third Hungarian might be over 65 and the number of childless families might steeply rise. The Demographic Research Institute of the Central Statistical Office has issued the three-yearly Demographic Portrait of Hungary 2015.

In the first four months of the year 2.9% more babies were born and 3.7% fewer people died than in the same period in 2013, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. In the surveyed period there were 28,318 births and 43,224 deaths, the report said.
