Churches are playing a larger role in Hungary’s educational system at the expense of non-affiliated private schools. Church schools have especially made progress in economically disadvantaged regions, where they tend to enroll the children of the elite. The Hungarian state believes that the most important players of the education system today are churchrun schools, government office chief János Lázár said in Mezőtúr, in south Hungary. Attending the opening of the renovated library of a Reformed Church College in eastern Hungary, Lázár said the government will place an emphasis on supporting church schools.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called for a “firm increase” in wages in the Hungarian economy, which he said required increasingly competitive businesses. Addressing a conference organised by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Budapest, Orbán said that reducing corporate and personal income taxes as well as employer contributions were necessary to enhance competitiveness.
