A successful heart transplant was performed on a three-month-old baby at the National Cardiology Institute last Thursday, director general Péter Ofner announced on Monday. The 5kg baby boy is the youngest patient to receive a new heart in Hungary, he said, and is in a stable condition.

The mayor of Saint Petersburg has cancelled a 2011 contract between the city and Hungarian property developer TriGránit on building a cultural centre in the city, Napi Gazdaság reports. The city does not intend to pay compensation for the cancelled project of about $600 million, the daily added.

A total of 96 policemen have been sacked for their conduct in autumn 2006, according to a summary provided to the cabinet by Interior Minister Sándor Pintér. Ten uniformed policemen convicted by a court will shortly be removed from the force. The state has paid Ft 270.5 million in compensation to 149 victims for police brutality committed in the autumn of 2006.

Two foreign youths jumped into the river from Erzsébet híd, and one of them swam ashore but lost sight of his 22-year-old friend, who has not yet been found, Pap added.
