Rare Private Theatre Opens Today In Budapest

Budapest’s Játékszín will reopen as a private theatre and celebrate its centenary today with a production entitled Mr. és Mrs. Owners Alexandra Metz, Tamás Bánk, Kristóf Németh and Attila Szűcs hope to stage 15-20 shows a month at the Teréz körút venue by next spring.
New National Theatre Director Sought In Budapest

The Human Resources Ministry has invited bids for the post of director of the National Theatre, as the five-year term of present director Róbert Alföldi will end next spring. The new director can start work on July 1, 2013 for five years.

The celebrations will begin on August 19 when the 'Street of Hungarian Flavours' will open at noon between the Buda side of the Erzsébet híd and Bem tér. Awards will be presented for Hungary’s best cake, sugar-free cake and ice cream. Pop music will play on Clark Ádám tér and on Bem tér from 8pm. Team GB might not have won any medals on 8 August (although we were very happy to see Hungary doing so well), but for me it was a day of firsts: Day 1 of the Festival was also the first anniversary of my arrival in Budapest and I made my first visit to the Sziget Festival and my first speech in Hungarian.

The Beijing National Theatre troupe will give performances of the opera Red Rock at the Hungarian State Opera on Wednesday and Thursday. The company will present Chinese traditional culture in Budapest following performances in Vienna and Prague on a tour of Europe. Red Rock blends motifs from traditional Chinese opera, Far Eastern folk music and western music.
