Fungarian: The Hungarian Cinema

In most languages the word for cinema is something similar to the French term cinématographe, originally coined by the Lumière brothers in the 1890s, who borrowed it from the Greek κίνημα (kínēma, “movement”) adding the French suffix -graphe. Not in Hungarian.

Francophone Festival Offers Cinema, Concerts, Vasarely Exhibition

Several cultural events, film screenings and discussions on topical issues such as migration will be organised at the Francophone Festival between February 26 and April 2 this year, organisers said. The festival will open with the screening of the recent French movie, Valley of Love starring Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert in Budapest’s Urania cinema.

Celebrating a half-century of rock with the release of their 19th studio album, 'Return To Forever' and a global 50th anniversary tour which kicked off in China on 1st May and runs through spring 2016. The tour stops at Budapest on February 29th in BudapestAréna from 8 p.m.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the latest instalment in the franchise, has broken several box office records in Hungary. On the film’s opening weekend, it drew 282,265 viewers over three days, generating 412.5 million forints (EUR 1.3m) in box office revenues.

For the first time in Europe the public is invited to the exhibition 'Moving Walls 22 / Watching You, Watching Me'. It explores how photography can be both an instrument of surveillance and a tool to expose and challenge its negative impact. The exhibition is at the Open Society Archives and will run until December 8 and will then travel to Berlin.
