Some 397 000 Hungarians spent more than 2.15 million guest nights in neighbouring Croatia in 2014, the highest numbers in eight years and an increase of 10% from 2013, the Budapest head of the Croatian Tourism Community, Marin Skenderovic, told the Hungarian news agency MTI.

A total of 1,183 non-European Union citizens purchased 1,143 properties in Budapest last year, mostly in downtown areas, daily Népszabadság said. The paper said that figures are available only about non-EU citizens’ purchases because they are expected to request a licence for buying property in Hungary.

Roughly a thousand foreigners have given the address of a 40-bed motel in Budapest’s 19th district as their permanent place of residence in the run-up to Sunday’s municipal elections, according to left-wing daily Népszabadság. The majority are Romanian citizens but a number of Slovaks have also registered the Viktória Pension as their permanent place of Hungarian residence.
