The government on Wednesday asked state-owned company executives to pay back any bonuses above 2 million forints (EUR 6,644) they received this year. Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics told Wednesday’s cabinet meeting that no bonuses had been paid in the public administration in 2013.

The European Court of Justice ruled on Tuesday against the Hungarian state when it said holding former district mayor György Hunvald in custody for 31 months was excessive. The Strasbourg-based court ruled that the state must pay 2,700 euros in compensation to Hunvald for infringing his right to be heard by a court within a reasonable time.

The national tax office (NAV) has clamped down on a retail ring involving large-scale tax fraud, involving 13 suspects. One person is already in pre-trial custody, NAV told MTI.
