The Irish novelist Colm Toibin received the Budapest Grand Prize at the opening of the 31st Budapest International Book Festival on Thursday, an honour with a personal resonance: it was in Budapest, in a hotel room by the Eastern Railway Station, that he wrote his second novel in 1990.

The police have closed off the area around Parliament and its underground garage until the end of the year in what the Speaker of Parliament said was a routine handover of duties from the abolished Parliamentary Guard, with the force citing only the building's security and the safety of lawmakers and protected persons.
