Russian-Free Gas Supply Feasible for Hungary, Says Energy Minister

Economy and Energy Minister Istvan Kapitany said "Hungary's gas supply will be secured even without Russian gas next October, if the situation unfolds as it currently appears to", in an interview with news portal Telex.

Kapitany said Hungary’s high exposure to Russian gas is not due to an inability to source gas from other regions, but this solution was the most cost-effective. He said that greater diversification could have been achieved, but the previous government relied heavily on Russian imports.

Most of the gas and oil still comes from Russia, and this is economically efficient, however, it is necessary to examine what other sources could provide energy carriers in an efficient manner, the minister said.

Alternative sources are available and can be expanded, negotiations regarding this are currently underway. Hungary has the option to secure gas from multiple geographical directions, there will be no issues with the country's supply, the minister said, adding that gas supply could be secured at a competitive price.

Kapitany said the government will finish a review of the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant by the end of the year and decide afterwards if it is necessary.

Under an agreement signed in 2014, Rosatom is building two more blocks at the Paks NPP, each with capacity of 1.2 GW. The blocks are expected to go online in 2030-2031.

The minister said the energy situation in Hungary has changed since 2013-2014, with solar power capacity now exceeding 8,000 MW. The issue lies in limited storage capacity as Hungary currently has a capacity of around 800 MW and plans to raise this significantly by 2030.

Kapitany said in the case of the Paks NPP they are examining extending the service life of the original facilities by another 20 years, as changed technical capabilities make this possible.
