Hungary’s opposition parties slammed the government’s planned referendum on the European Union’s proposed mandatory migrant quota scheme after the supreme court approved the vote in a binding decision. A while back Medián conducted a survey on anti-Semitism in Hungary. It just made its findings public. The document is almost forty pages long, full of tables and graphs, and defies being summarized in a few paragraphs. Socialist lawmaker István Nyakó said that the government decision to revoke the law on Sunday shopping restrictions was “a small victory for the opposition Socialists and a big one for the electorate”. For the second time, the ruling parties have been forced to “back off”, Nyakó said, referring to demonstrations that resulted in the withdrawal of plans to introduce an internet tax in the past.

Nobel laureate author Imre Kertész died at age 86 after a long and serious illness, the publisher Magvető said. The novelist, essayist and translator was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming a Nobel laureate in 2002.
