European Commission Gives Green Light To Austria-Hungary Cross-Border Cooperation

The European Commission (EC) has given the green light to a cross-border cooperation programme between Hungary and Austria worth 30 billion forints (EUR 95m). The commission Interreg funds will cover 78 million euros. The commission’s statement cites Corina Cretu, commissioner for regional policies, as saying that the Austrian-Hungarian border is invested in symbolic significance.

Lawmakers approved a decree which mandates the government to identify “safe” countries from where asylum requests would be rejected. The ruling Fidesz decree passed with 140 MPs in favour and 14 against and 27 abstentions. The public prosecutor’s office has revealed irregularities in the operation of several organisations supported by Norway Grants, the Government Control Office (Kehi) said. Kehi said it had asked the prosecutor to review seven NGOs supported by Norway Grants, including five operating in Budapest.

The Hungarian-born American art collector Imre Pákh told MTI he will not take measures to remove Mihály Munkácsy’s monumental painting “Golgotha” from a Debrecen gallery until the end of the summer. Earlier, Pákh said the painting would be removed from the Déri Museum on June 25, after talks on its sale to the state of Hungary reached an impasse.
