Until 12 March 2014 SIRHA Budapest welcomes manufacturers, distributors and purchasers from the food, baking and confectionery industries, and from the hotel, catering and culinary sectors. HUNGEXPO used a new concept when organising this trade fair, where all the partners from former FOODAPEST, UKBA and HOVENTA trade exhibitions are welcomed.

On a cold, wet Sunday afternoon, what better way to enjoy yourself than with some wonderful food and drink? And the crowds did come out to enjoy the annual Mangalica Festival. If you fancy a taste of a pig that came close to extinction just a few decades ago, the magnificent mangalica meat is said to be even tastier and healthier than regular pork.

Today it is the worlds largest 'folk-festival' in the world with more than 6 million visitors yearly. These facts motivated other cities like Paris, Sydney and Edinburgh to run their own ‘Octoberfests’, and this year it took place in Budapest for the first time.

“Kürtőskalács” or “kürtős kalács” is a Hungarian pastry also known as chimney cake or stove cake. The “Kürtőskalács” originates from Transylvania (Erdély) historical region, which is used to be part of Hungary. The 'National Cheese Contest of European Nations' was organised for the first time in Hungary by SZEGA Foods, in their new ‘Covent Garden’ style delicatessen, in the basement area of Budagyöngye shopping mall. Guests could subsequently taste the cheeses during the wine festival too.

I was intrigued to find out exactly what street food was on offer this weekend, in downtown Pest, at the historic Hold Street covered market hall. To my surprise, so were many more, who gravitated to this very popular occasion. Held in the elevated part of the market, you could meander around and take your pick at the many different foods and drinks on offer.
