Hungarian hospitals are set to receive extra funding in the summer, the newly appointed state secretary for health told MTI in an interview. Gábor Zombor said his main task was to staunch and reverse the outflow of Hungarian health-care workers to the West.

State and private-sector spending on health care in Hungary, at 8% of GDP in 2012, was lower than the 9.3% average in OECD countries, the intergovernmental think-tank said in a report. Among the 34 countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Hungary stood in 26th place on the health spending chart. Spending on medicines generally declined, the OECD report said.

The Hungarian Hospital Association supports introducing paid-for services in state hospitals, the association’s president said in business daily Napi Gazdaság’s Thursday edition. Demand for services provided in the private health-care market has increased in recent years, György Velkey told the paper. Introducing paid-for care would greatly benefit underfinanced state hospitals, he said.
