October 23 is a national holiday in Hungary, commemorating the 1956 revolution against the Soviet rule, which was later crushed by brute force. The uprising began as a spontaneous nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People’s Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956. On 23 October Hungary marks the 58th anniversary of 1956, and it is is a national holiday. It commemorates the Revolution of 1956, when Hungarians rose up against the Soviet ruled communist system and also the ‘Day of the Republic’, as in 1989 Hungary was declared a republic. On October 22nd and 23rd there are several programs held throughout Hungary.
