St. Stephen's Day Celebrations In Budapest, 20 August

This year, 20 August celebrations will be held under the slogan “The country – together as one”. A special feature of this year’s events is that the series of programmes Nagyon Balaton (Very Balaton!) will include colourful family events, concerts and fireworks in several towns along the shores of Lake Balaton to commemorate the foundation of the Hungarian State.

Visitors are offered a variety of folk dance shows and concerts on Clark Ádám Square. Stilts parade, inauguration of Hungary’s birthday cake, traditional dancers, folk singers, and the performance of the popular TV production, School of Singing will offer real family entertainment.

The blessing of the bread is a traditionally integral part of the celebrations of 20 August. Traditionally, the first bread made of the newly harvested wheat was prepared for the day of St Stephen. The bread adorned with a ribbon in the national colours is the symbol of the national holiday.

Due to the severe weather conditions Interior Ministry suggested to cancel all outdoor events on 15 March. The indoor celebrations are not affected.

"The significance of the 80.000-piece graphic collection of the Hungarian National Gallery is a little-known fact, since the paper-based objects are very sensitive and cannot be part of the permanent exhibition. In the evening of 20 August, the day that marks the anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian State, more than half a million people watched the ceremonial fireworks display held on the Danube Banks. The ceremonial events attracted much attention and were held in high spirits; thousands of tourists were able to share the festive atmosphere of one of Hungary’s greatest national holidays.
