One must never forget the fate of those deported to Soviet forced labour camps of the Gulag during and after WWII, the state secretary for Hungarian communities abroad said on Monday. János Árpád Potápi launched a series of programmes before the official ending of the Gulag memorial year on February 25, a memorial day of martyrs of communism, in the House of Hungarians in the Buda Castle.

Prison Chief: Almost 90% Of Inmates Study Or Work

More than 10,000 of Hungary’s prison inmates, or 88%, spend their term studying or working, national prison chief Tamás Tóth said. He said one of the goals of the prison system was to rehabilitate inmates so that they could return to society as working citizens. Hungarians on average will spend 40,000 forints (127 euros) on Christmas this year, a survey by NRC market research shows. The survey, conducted for CIB Bank, also indicates that more than half of the population will have no more than 25,000 forints for the same purpose, while only 13% of all respondents will spend 75,000 forints or more.
