Judge Issues Three Life Sentences For Roma Murders In Hungary

The Budapest Regional Court yesterday sentenced the three main defendants to lifetime prison terms and the fourth to 13 years for the serial murders of six Roma in 2008 and 2009. Árpád Kiss, his brother István and Zsolt Pet were convicted of premeditated murder, and the fourth defendant István Csontos, who was their driver, for acting as an accomplice.

One person was killed when a race car swerved off the road and slammed into spectators in Újfehértó, east Hungary on Sunday. Eight other people were severely injured. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics on Monday sent an open letter to Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner in charge of justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, in response to an interview published in Hungarian daily Népszava two days ago, in which she said, among other remarks, that the Hungarian legal system should comply with EU norms.
