Inspired by a true story, “The play, Dickensian in an Eastern European way, with a fierce, lean poetry, is a vivid portrait...” writes The Chicago Sun Times. After its UK premier, a play by one of Europe’s most exciting playwrights, Andras Visky, will comes to Budapest, staged by a collective of London-based Eastern European artists. Pre-show backstage tour in English at the Mikroszinpad on Saturday 4 May as part of the Theatre Night.

Showing at Thália Theatre on 3, 4 May 2013, 7:30 pm

In 1989, the outside world first saw images of thousands of abandoned children living in filthy, cramped orphanages in Romania. The catastrophic anti-contraception policies of the country’s long-time communist dictator, Ceausescu, had created a generation of children cared for by the state.

I Killed My Mother is the story of Bernadett, a modern day Jane Eyre of Ceausescu’s Romania, an orphan, exposed to cruelty and neglect, yet possessing a strong sense of self-respect and the capacity to love and to forgive.

Together with her first love, Clip, they survive abandonment and institutionalisation by conjuring a spiritual landscape of hope and order. Her empowering coming of age story is a quiet yet captivating theatrical reportage to the shocking tabloid images that made the headlines 20 years ago.

Written by Andras Visky
Directed by Natalia Gleason
