Fresh Evidence: Drunk Speedboat Driver Caused Latest Danube Boat Disaster
The pilot of the speedboat which collided with a hotel ship on the Danube near Verőce last Saturday night may have been drunk, while the captain of the larger vessel may have been aware of the collision but did not care, according to evidence posted on the Budapest Regional Court website.

Evidence indicates that the pilot steered the motorboat carrying eight people “using the entire width of the river, with unjustified changes of direction”.

The hotel boat was traveling on automatic control when the speedboat pilot changed direction and steered straight towards the ship. As the speedboat came close to the bow of ship, the pilot suddenly steered to the right, but he could no longer avoid the collision and crashed into the larger vessel at high speed.

The motorboat and all but one of its passengers were crushed under the hotel ship.

The pilot and a female passenger were killed instantly, and another passenger was seriously injured but was able to swim ashore.

The other five passengers of the speedboat are still being sought.

The hotel ship continued without slowing down, according to the court. The smaller boat crashed into the hotel ship with a loud sound, but the captain did not stop to offer help.
