The Democratic Trade Union of Teachers (PDSZ) has called on the government to restore the upper age limit for compulsory schooling to 18 years. Speaking in front of the Ministry of Human Resources on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the union’s chief, László Mendrey, said membership of the National Teachers’ Chamber should be made voluntary rather than mandatory.

Winning with over 50% of the vote, Fidesz can claim the backing of the majority of voters, although this can be challenged with view to the low turnout, analyst Róbert László said.

There was nothing that would have prevented the authorities from holding both elections on May 25, but such an arrangement wasn’t deemed advantageous to the governing party.
