The companies were caught off guard by the government's plans to launch a Ft 2 per minute tax on telephone calls from July and have not factored this into their business plans, Livia Benko, head of the Direct Marketing Association told the business daily.

"Some 1,200 employees of Nokia received notices of dismissal yesterday, as the mobile-phone maker began the first wave of job cuts at its Komárom factory. "Media and communications authority NMHH has excluded RCS & RDS, the company behind the brand name Digi, and Vietnamese telecom company Viettel from the 900MHz frequency tender. Only Magyar Telekom, Vodafone, Telenor and a consortium of state companies Magyar Posta, MVM and MFB Invest filed valid applications for future bidding, the NMHH said.
