Hungary Introduces New 20.000 Forint Banknotes

This Wednesday the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) released its new 20.000-forint banknotes. The change was previously announced in a decree published in late September in the Hungarian Official Journal. The colour of the banknote has changed a bit, turning into greenish-blue in the middle. Furthermore, the banknote has become protected by special fibers and safety threads.

The National Bank of Hungary (NBH) is issuing a reworked version of the 20,000 forint banknote. The new version will have a different colour scheme, with multiple colours on the front of the note giving an overall blueish-green tone. The size of the banknote will remain the same and it will still portray Ferenc Deák, Hungarian politician and statesman from the 19th century.

The upgraded 10 000 forint banknote came into circulation from 1 December, and is likely to be widely available for everyday use from 2015. Old 10 000 forint notes will remain legal tender until a decision is made by the National Bank on their withdrawal.

Today I spent my third and final day at the Sziget Festival for this year. It was, unsurprisingly, a day of threes – third speech in Hungarian, policemen from three countries, three unexpected faces on Hungarian banknotes, and a meeting with three organisations. And Team GB remains third in the Olympic medals table. I am now passing the baton to three of the younger generation for the weekend.
