The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) in the European Parliament has condemned talk in Hungary of restoring the death penalty and “the xenophobic and leading wording” of the government’s national consultation on migration. The ALDE statement was released ahead of a debate in the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee on the situation of fundamental rights in the EU.

Kövér: Hungarians’ Expectations Of Democracy Were “Unrealistic”

Expectations about Hungary’s democratic transition and accession to the European Union had been unrealistic, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said. Assessing the period since Hungary’s regime change 25 years ago in an interview to public news channel M1, Kövér said the question must be asked if the development gap has closed between Hungary and older EU member states.

The European Parliament’s legal committee on Wednesday heard MEP Béla Kovács, of the radical nationalist Jobbik party, behind closed doors in a case involving the potential suspension of his immunity. Last year Péter Polt, Hungary’s public prosecutor, asked EP president Martin Schultz to suspend Kovács’s immunity on suspicion that the Jobbik politician spied against European Union institutions.

Andrássy Statue Returns To Budapest Kossuth Tér

A large-scale bronze equestrian statue of Gyula Andrássy, Austro-Hungarian foreign minister in the 1870s, was erected on Kossuth tér on Tuesday. The 6.5-metre high statue located on the south side of the Parliament building is the last work of art required to recreate the look of the square as it was in 1944.
