Hundreds Of Thousands Celebrated The Anniversary Of The Foundation Of The State In Budapest

In the evening of 20 August, the day that marks the anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian State, more than half a million people watched the ceremonial fireworks display held on the Danube Banks. The ceremonial events attracted much attention and were held in high spirits; thousands of tourists were able to share the festive atmosphere of one of Hungary’s greatest national holidays.

The celebrations will begin on August 19 when the 'Street of Hungarian Flavours' will open at noon between the Buda side of the Erzsébet híd and Bem tér. Awards will be presented for Hungary’s best cake, sugar-free cake and ice cream. Pop music will play on Clark Ádám tér and on Bem tér from 8pm. On Monday morning the 20th Sziget Festival officially ended. Glastonbury’s founder, Michael Eavis was amongst the 379 thousand visitors, generously praising Sziget for being even more colourful than his own event. Besides celebrating the 20th edition, Sziget also welcomed its 6 millionth visitor this year.

In the year of the London Olympic Games, the exhibition honours the achievements of both known and less known former Hungarian Jewish Olympic champions. In her speech Mrs Bubbear congratulated for the achievements of the former champions, the relatives of many took part in the opening.
