Cornerstone of World Aquatics Headquarters Laid in Budapest
- 8 Oct 2025 6:12 AM
Gergely Gulyas, the head of the Prime Minister's Office, noted at the ceremony Hungary's deep connection to water sports and the fact that Hungarian water polo players have won the most Olympic medals in the sport, while swimmers rank fourth.
The new headquarters will join other international sports federations already based in Budapest, such as the International Judo Federation and the International Canoe Federation, he added.
The new building will not only house the WA administration but also function as a world-class training and development centre, supported by the Hungarian government and national aquatic federations.
Hussain Al-Musallam, WA's Kuwaiti president, called it a major success for sports diplomacy and a significant step for aquatic sports globally.
Adam Schmidt, the state secretary for sport, highlighted the importance of the project for both elite and developing aquatic sports in Hungary. Whereas swimming and water polo are already world-class, sports like artistic swimming and diving will benefit from access to international expertise and resources, he added.
Peter Zentai, owner of the Lang Quarter in Budapest's 13th district, said the WA headquarters is a central element of an 8.5-hectare development project.
The groundbreaking was symbolically launched by Gulyas, Al-Musallam, Schmidt, and WA Executive Director Brent Nowicki.
The project is seen as a catalyst for further international sports organisations to choose Budapest as their base, reinforcing Hungary's reputation as a stable and secure host for global sports governance.
Aquatics World Championships 2027 - Organizing Committee Formed
The organizing committee for the 2027 Budapest Aquatics World Championships was formed on Tuesday in the presence of Ádám Schmidt, Secretary of State for Sport, and Hussein al-Mussalam, President of the International Aquatics Federation.
"It is a great recognition for us that the international federation has once again entrusted us with the organization of the World Championships. This time too, the Hungarian organizers will do everything they can to make 2027 the most successful World Aquatics Championships of all time," the press release from the Ministry of Defense quotes Ádám Schmidt, who is also the government commissioner responsible for coordinating all government tasks related to the organization of the World Championships.
After 2017 and 2022, 2027 will be the third World Aquatics Championships in Hungary.
Alongside Schmidt, the co-chair of the organizing committee is Sándor Wladár, president of the Hungarian Swimming Association, who emphasized that it is a great pleasure that he and his team have once again received trust from the international association and the Hungarian government.
"The success of the past years has set the bar high, but the fans and guests who come here can count on us again. We are once again trying to impress the world with something that has never been done before," he explained.
He emphasized that this time, the focus will be on the competitors, but they are also preparing new features that can make the event memorable for all visitors.
Also managing the organization as co-chair of the committee is Mátyás Falvai, CEO of the National Event Organizing Agency, who highlighted that the Hungarian capital has proven itself several times in hosting world water events.
"Over the past years, Hungary has gained organizing experience in several sports that elevates us to the top of the world. As organizers, we are now working to create unforgettable sporting experiences for sports lovers and Hungarian fans visiting our country, both on site and through broadcasting," he explained.
