Veszprém & Bakony-Balaton Named European Region of Sport for 2026
- 5 Aug 2025 9:38 AM
The honour comes from ACES Europe (the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation), a Brussels-based organisation that has recognised cities and regions across Europe since 2001 for their commitment to promoting sport, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles. ACES Europe works in close partnership with institutions of the European Union.
According to the announcement, the successful application was the result of several months of coordinated work involving local sports clubs, civil organisations, municipalities, and regional institutions.
The initiative was not only about earning the title but also about launching a long-term cultural shift towards healthier living and stronger community ties through sport.
The application was built on core values such as community involvement, inclusion, accessibility, sustainability, and volunteerism. One of the project’s main goals is to encourage more people to be active by celebrating the joy of movement, the spirit of fair play, the pursuit of excellence, and the unifying power of sport.
Following the submission, an ACES Europe delegation visited the region in mid-July, touring key sports and recreational venues, including:
-
Eplény Ski Arena Vibe Park
-
Veszprém Swimming Arena
-
University of Pannonia sports facilities
-
ActiCity Dance and Movement Arts Center
-
Outdoor and water sports locations in Balatonalmádi and Balatonfüred, such as the Nereus Water Base, Wesselényi Beach, Forrás Sport Park, and the Kékszalag Port
The award was officially announced in a video message by Veszprém Mayor Gyula Porga, with MP Péter Ovádi, Alíz Markovits (CEO of Veszprém-Balaton 2023 Zrt.), and Olympic champion hammer thrower Balázs Kiss, who served as a professional advisor for the project.
The full schedule of sports and health-related events planned for 2026 will be revealed this autumn.
As part of the campaign, the region also entered a short film into ACES Europe’s 2025 international video competition. The film tells the story of Botond Birnbauer, a para-swimmer from Veszprém, and powerfully illustrates the inclusive and transformative nature of sport. Its central message is clear: everyone deserves access to the joy of movement, regardless of ability.
