Over the past two years Hungarian private individuals closed over 430,000 bank accounts, business daily Világgazdaság said. In 2014 alone, the number of private bank accounts dropped by 282,000. The trend could be attributed to the duty imposed on financial transactions which triggered a rise in bank charges, according to the central bank.

A Buddha statue found to contain the 900-year-old mummified remains of a monk has been withdrawn by its owner from an exhibit in the Hungarian National History Museum, the museum’s spokeswoman said. Mónika Kiss-Stefán confirmed that the owner had the statue removed, without explanation, on Friday.

Representatives of the governments of Hungary and Luxembourg signed an agreement to eliminate double taxation on the sidelines of a meeting of EU finance ministers, the economy ministry said. The new agreement, signed by Economy Minister Mihály Varga and counterpart Pierre Gramegna, replaces an earlier one signed in 1990.
