Major Renovation Planned for Gödöllő Royal Palace in Hungary
Hungary’s iconic Royal Palace of Gödöllő — once home to Queen Elisabeth (“Sisi”) — is set for a comprehensive modernisation. A large-scale renovation project will restore the entire complex, enhance sustainability, and expand its visitor facilities over the next nine years.

Public–Private Partnership to Drive Restoration

A formal agreement on the investment was signed in the palace’s ceremonial hall by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Sándor Csányi, Chairman and CEO of OTP Bank, who also chairs the board of trustees of the Foundation for the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Funding will be shared equally between the Hungarian state and OTP Bank, FMbusiness.hu informs.

Sustainable Modernisation

According to Csányi, approximately 2,500 square meters of the site have already been renovated, while an additional 6,000 square meters await reconstruction. The previously restored central building complex will undergo energy efficiency upgrades, bringing 18th-century architecture in line with modern sustainability standards.

The project also includes the reconstruction of the orangery and marble stable, as well as the creation of a museum library and research centre, a brewery, a restaurant, and a musicians’ wing, further enhancing the estate’s cultural and tourism value.

Csányi praised Tamás Ujváry, Director of the Palace, for his role in transforming Gödöllő into Hungary’s second most visited cultural institution, highlighting the project’s significance not only for heritage preservation but also for facility management and long-term operational excellence.
