Hungary’s capital has just been named as this year’s best value city break destination, in the new City Costs Barometer released by the UK Post Office 'Travel Money' guide. The reports’s key findings show that Budapest has overtaken last year’s best bargain, Riga, to emerge as the cheapest of 25 city break destinations for meals, drinks, sightseeing, city travel and hotel accommodation.

MPs have run up more official expenses in the past three years than in the previous four years, the tabloid Blikk reported on Tuesday. The tabloid found that the ten MPs claiming the most expenses have collected at least Ft 25 million each so far and could rake in a further Ft 11-12 million before the next elections.

Budapest mayor István Tarlós agreed to let Jewish cultural centre Sirály remain open for the Passover season after a failed attempt to shut down the Sixth District facility Friday. The city property management company sent an e-mail on Thursday evening then attempted to take control of the Király utca café on Friday morning by sending security guards to change the lock on the front door.

The Hungaricum Committee classified three additional products as hungarikums – distinctive products unique to Hungary – at its meeting in the village of Herend, Veszprém county yesterday. The new hungarikums are handmade porcelain from Herend, pálinka and the grapeskin brandy törkölypálinka.
