Étienne Méhul (1763–1817), one of the most significant and influential opera composers during the French revolution and the politically turbulent decades thereafter, wrote some forty works for musical theatre. Frederick Sweet was born in New York City of Hungarian parents (both from Budapest) who had immigrated to the United States before World War II. Since Hungarian was spoken at home, Sweet acquired it as a second language.
