'Board of Peace' Accession Carries no Financial Burden for Hungary, Says FM
Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, on Wednesday asked parliament to debate and ratify Hungary's accession to the Board of Peace.

According to a statement issued by his ministry, Szijjarto argued that in the new world order currently taking shape, "intergovernmental cooperation, bilateral relations as well as personal relations and friendships between leaders are gaining importance."

Szijjarto welcomed the establishment of the Board of Peace by US President Donald Trump, adding that since the Abraham accords of 2020, this provided the best hope for peace in the Middle East.

He noted that security in the Middle East was closely related to European security, arguing that the key link between the two was migration.

"The security situation in the Middle East determines to a great extent whether the protection of Hungary's southern border is an easier or a more difficult task. And we are not willing to give up on our goal of Hungary remaining a migrant-free country," Szijjarto said.

Further, he went on to point out that efforts to create peace in Ukraine had significantly strengthened since Trump took office last year.

"This was another reason for the government to decide to participate in the Board of Peace. Hungary's prime minister attended the inaugural meeting in Washington, DC last week. Earlier in Davos he signed the document on accession. The accession does not entail a financial burden for Hungary."
